MEES regulations and EPC B 2031
Current requirements and future direction
The current Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) requires privately rented commercial properties in England and Wales to achieve a minimum EPC rating of E, unless a valid exemption applies.
The Government has confirmed plans for rented non-domestic properties over 1,000m² to achieve EPC B by 2031 where it is cost-effective to do so. Smaller properties under 1,000m² remain subject to the current EPC E requirement, although further details are expected as future policy develops.
